2012 Magical Night of Giving Parade : December 2, 2012 -- The Marching Quaker Band opened the Magical Night of Giving at New Philadelphia's New Towne Mall. The were followed by Santa and children riding in Santa's train. Don't be fooled by the outside photos... that's not snow... just a slight drizzle. The outside temperature was a comfortable 53 degrees. I apologize for the slight blur in many of the pics... the band was moving briskly as they passed close by me and this caused those closest to me to be out of focus.

2012 OMEA State Marching Band Finals : November 3, 2012 -- The New Philadelphia Marching Quaker Band captures a Superior Rating at the Ohio State Marching Band Finals held at Brunswick High School. It was a cold, windy and rainy day. The band had only one rehearsal the previous week and a half due to rain. Fortunately, the students pulled everything together and performed a superior show to capture the highest rating possible.

2012 Akron BOA : October 13,2012 -- The day started early at Akron University's InfoCision Stadium. The Marching Quaker Band was first to perform for Prelims. After performing, the band watched the end of Prelims and learned that they would also perform in Finals later that evening. After the Finals performance, the rain began and the band changed their clothes and went across the street for food. The rain ended and the band again changed back into uniform to participate in the Finals Retreat to complete the evening.

2012 Marietta Competition : October 6, 2012 -- The 51st Annual Marietta Band-O-Rama proved to be spectacular for the Marching Quaker Band. The weather was comfortably in the mid 50's into the evening. Rain was not in site. The MQB enjoyed a hour of free time when to visit the refreshment stand before they prepared for their warm-up. The results... Grand Champion Band... which included capturing all the Overall Caption Awards as-well-as all the Class A Awards! The show: METALLIC 2012

2012 Louisville Competition : September 22, 2012 -- When the band pulled in to Louisville, they were greeted by heavy rain and thunder which kept them sitting on their bus for nearly an hour. As the rain began to subside, the students were able to comfortably wait in Louisville high school's gymnasium until the contest started (a half-hour late). The rain has escorted in a beautiful sunset and much cooler weather. The weather must have agreed with the Marching Quaker Band because the students were able to capture a 2nd place finish in Class A and Best Percussion in Class A. Better yet, the percussion captured Best Overall out of all 10 bands participating at the Louisville contest.

2012 Akron OMEA : September 22, 2012 -- What began as a cold, windy day turned sunny and beautiful as the Marching Quaker Band warmed up outside of the University of Akron's InfoCission Stadium. The band competed against eight other bands in Class A at this OMEA contest. The MQB came away from Akron with a 4th place finish. 2012 Alumni Band Rehearsal : July 5, 2012 -- Alumni arrived at the New Philadelphia High School Band Room to meet with the current Marching Quaker Band members. After a short rehearsal with the music, everyone made their way into the street for an hour of parade marching. 176 alumni were signed up to participate in the First Town Days Festival parade to be held on July 6th.

Pearl Harbor, Day 4-5 : December 8, 2011 -- The Marching Quaker Band returned to the Pearl Harbor area to visit the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial. Students first explored the museum and its many artifacts from the events of that day--among them, the rough draft of Roosevelt’s Address to Congress--including his handwritten corrections on the typewritten document. An informative documentary followed, and students boarded a ferry to the memorial, which is built over the wrecked ship. So solemn is the atmosphere that there is no texting or even conversation to or at the memorial. Unassuming from the outside, the memorial is a beautiful, breathtaking sanctuary that honors the men entombed beneath. We experienced firsthand why Hawaii is nicknamed “The Rainbow State.” Every day there have been several rainbows: some intense, some faint, some double--there may be as many different descriptions of rainbows here as Eskimoes have words for snow in their vocabulary? The sunny days and the brief, light sprinkling rain create the perfect conditions. We notice the lack of humidity and bugs here. We definitely can see why Hawaii is considered a paradise. A bus tour of the city followed, including the capitol building, Punchbowl cemetery, and Dog the Bounty Hunter’s office (a student-requested site). The Christmas decorations are amusing--Santa and Mrs. Claus on the beach. Unlike the States, Hawaiians seem not to be bombarded by Christmas commercialism; decorations here are minimal, and we have to keep reminding ourselves that it is December. The bus driver pointed out the casual dress (Hawaiian shirts, slacks and sandals) and slow pace of the professionals strolling along the city streets, unlike the pace of our busy cities. The students got some much deserved free time to finally swim in the ocean water, walk along the beach or visit the shops before enjoying a barbecue on the beach, complete with free hula lessons for the females, then the males. You can guess which was more entertaining! In the evening, students enjoyed the evening sights and final souvenir shopping along the Waikiki Beach shopping district. By the way, yes, of course there is a McDonalds here, but the featured pie is banana, and the yogurt at breakfast has been coconut, guava, passionfruit and pineapple flavored.

Pearl Harbor, Day 3 : December 7, 2011 -- the Marching Quaker Band got an early start and headed straight to Pearl Harbor. After an intense rehearsal with the students representing other states in the mass band, the moment for which the students have been preparing for the past year finally arrived. Due to his winning essay, junior Zac Kopp was given the honor of raising the flag at the ceremony. He was informed that he is now named an Honorary Ensign of the U.S.S. Missouri, a distinction reserved for those who raise the Stars and Stripes on the ship. Following lunch and a photo-op, students were given a tour of the ship, which allowed them the opportunity to see the historic site on deck where the Japanese surrender document was signed, thus ending World War II. The evening’s festivities included a walk along the beach at sunset and a Hawaiian luau, complete with authentic dishes, entertainment and dancing.

Pearl Harbor, Day 1 : December 5, 2011 -- After a bus trip to Cleveland Airport, the Marching Quaker Band embarked on an 11 hour plane trip to Honolulu, Hawaii. The main group of students traveled to New Jersey for a one hour layover before heading out to Hawaii. After arriving and checking in to the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, the band was treated to a pizza party at the Round Table Pizza Parlor in Waikiki. (Note: Some photos may be out of order)

Pearl Harbor, Day 2 : December 6, 2011 -- The band began the day with a tour of the east shore of the island. They learned about the Hawaiian topography, history and culture from their native Hawaiian bus driver/tour guide. In the afternoon they listened to the story of Pearl Harbor survivor Allen Bodenlos where we also discovered that MQB band member Zac Kopp won an essay contest among all the 600-plus students. Zac won the privilege of raising the Stars and Stripes on the USS Missouri during the commemoration ceremony on December 7th. They then met with NPHS grad and former Disney music chief, Mike Davis, who is directing the Mass Band performance. Davis led the band in a three hour rehearsal for the December 7th performance.

2011 Nordonia Contest : October 1, 2011 -- Nordonia Festival of Bands, Macedonia, Ohio It was a cool, damp competition (although we kept saying it was sunny and 72 degrees). It was our first time in Nordonia's new stadium complete with FieldTurf (look for the photo of the old stadium site complete with the old light poles). MQB took 3rd in Class A, Best Percussion in Class A and an OMEA superior rating.

2011 Band Camp, Day 4 : August 18, 2011 -- Skyview Ranch, Millersburg, Ohio The Marching Quaker Band's last rehearsal at camp had parents and boosters show up for a cookout. The students were able to show a little of the work they accomplished during their past four days at Skyview. 2010 BOA Nationals, Last Day : November 13, 2010 -- The students packed their belongings before heading into downtown Indianapolis to explore shops. The most popular location was a chocolate shop where everyone seemed to settle waiting for the buses to return. They then returned to the Benedict Inn for a final meal provided by the boosters before heading back to watch semi-finals. BTW: Many of the photos at the Chocolate Cafe were taken by Adam!

2010 BOA Nationals, Contest Day : November 12, 2010 -- It was a beautiful day. The nutting ceremony was held, we ate lunch and prepared for the trip to Lucas Oil Stadium. Our buses were parked next to the stadium. We walked across the lot to our equipment, allowing us a perfect view of the massive structure. We entered the field level loading dock and made our way to our physical and music warm-up prior to performance. We were able to catch a glimpse of the field as we passed by the entrance door to the performance area.

2010 BOA Nationals, Arrival : November 11, 2010 -- After Veterans Day Ceremonies in New Philadelphia, students boarded the buses for the trip to Indianapolis. They arrived in the suburb of Beech Grove at 8:30pm. They stayed in the gym of a conference and retreat center that is part of a local monastery, The Benedict Inn. When the Fifth-Wheel arrived (late-- because the band's pick-up suffered a break down and another pick-up was graciously donated to haul the equipment and uniforms) the band held a quick instrumental practice in the parking lot until it grew dark... ...and we even had local visitors who wondered what we were doing...

Luckily, the sun was shining brightly at Dublin-Coffman stadium. The New Philadelphia Marching Quaker Band captured the highest rating possible for State Finals... a rating of 1: Superior.

It was a beautiful sunny day... warm enough to go without a jacket, yet cool enough to appreciate one. The Marching Quaker Band performed in preliminary competition at 11:15am. They then loaded the buses and traveled to a small roadside park where the boosters provided lunch. The band then returned and viewed the remainder of prelims which ended at 4:30pm. Although the band did not score high enough to make finals, the students enjoyed performing in a well run BOA contest and were able to view some of the best band from this side of the United States. Performance photos are available for viewing in another gallery.

2010 Licking Valley Band Fest : September 25, 2010 -- It was a beautiful sunny day. The temperatures were in the mid to upper 70's, but it felt HOT in the direct sun. The Marching Quaker Band captured First Place in Class A and also earned the Best Auxiliary and Best Percussion in Class A. The band also qualified for OMEA State Marching Band Finals by receiving a 1 rating.

2010 Picnic in the Park : August 12, 2010 -- New Philadelphia Band Boosters held a "Parent/Booster Band Camp" at Tuscora Park. The Boosters unveiled their 2010 Connect shirts and the MQB ball caps. Mr. Furbay introduced the Booster officers, directors and volunteers working with the students. The Marching Quaker Band was there to share in the festivities and show everyone what they have learned after two weeks of practice at South Elementary.

2009 OMEA State Finals Contest : November 7, 2009 -- New Philadelphia Marching Quaker Band at OMEA State Finals, Dublin-Coffman Stadium, Dublin, OH The band enjoyed lunch at CiCi's Pizza before going to Dublin-Coffman HS for their warm-up and performance. It was a beautiful day with temperatures in the mid 60s. The band received an Excellent Rating from their 2:30pm performance.

2009 New Phila Competition : October 24, 2009 -- The New Philadelphia OMEA sanctioned contest held at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium. There were two small rain showers that quickly swept through the area. The skies then cleared and the evening remained cool and comfortable. There were 17 bands competing at this 34th annual contest.

2009 BOA Massillon Regional : October 17, 2009 -- Bands of America Regional at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon, Ohio... The day began at 10am with a rehearsal at Quaker Stadium. The Boosters then fed the students at 11:30 prior to heading for Massillon. The Marching Quaker Band performed in preliminary competition at 3:30pm... The weather was a chilly 43 degrees with cloudy skies. Although the band did not make Finals, everyone remained at the competition to observe the Finals Competition and learn from the competing bands.

2009 Revere Contest : October 3, 2009 -- Our second competition of the day was at Revere High School's OMEA sanctioned contest. The Marching Quaker Band performed well on Revere's new field surface and captured First Place in Class A and Best Percussion and Best Auxiliary in Class A. They received another OMEA Superior Rating.

2009 Nordonia Contest : October 3, 2009 -- Our first competition of the day began with a warm-up at South Elementary before leaving for the Nordonia OMEA sanctioned contest. It was a beautiful cool day with temperatures in the high 60's to low 70's. The Marching Quaker Band captured First Place in Class A and an OMEA Superior Rating at Nordonia. The Boosters fed the band at a nearby State Park before they headed for the next competition at Revere High School.

2009 Cambridge Contest (cancelled) : September, 26, 2009 -- It was a comfortably cool day, but threatening rain was in the forecast... When the Marching Quaker Band arrived at Cambridge, the rain was constant and promised to last the remainder of the day. The decision to cancel the competition came within a half-hour of our arrival.

2009 Louisville Contest : September 19, 2009 -- Louisville's Music in Motion OMEA sanctioned contest... The band met at South School for a brief rehearsal prior to leaving for Louisville. The Marching Quaker Band received a Superior Rating at Louisville to qualify for OMEA State Finals... They captured Best Visual Performance, Best Percussion and took 2nd Place in Class A.

2009 Band Camp : August 20, 2009 -- Evening rehearsal for the Marching Quaker Band Skyview Ranch in Millersburg, Ohio. The last day of camp was riddled with spotty rain showers and thunderstorms. The final rehearsal was interrupted by a sudden downpour. The band took shelter in the dining hall until the storm passed. The weather was sunny and beautiful for the remainder of rehearsal. The Boosters invited parents and friends out to view the final rehearsal and learn more about the band family.

2009 Trumpet in the Land rehearsal : August 13, 2009 -- The Marching Quaker Band was invited to perform at the conclusion of Trumpet in the Land's production of Music Man. The students learned the music for the song, "76 Trombones" and performed it for the curtain call and then marched on the stage to perform the song for the audience. It was a beautiful, clear night and the performance was greatly appreciated by the cast and audience. (Due to copyright laws, no part of the theatrical performance was photographed)

2007 Revere Contest : October 6, 2007, evening -- After a hot/humid morning & afternoon at Nordonia, the band stopped at a nearby State park where the Boosters provided a meal... We arrived at Revere's OMEA sanctioned contest just as the sun was setting... This provided a beautiful and pleasant evening as a light fog settled onto the field. The night was topped off by the New Philadelphia High School Marching Quaker Band capturing the most outstanding band of the competition.

2006 Fire Truck Rescue : August 1, 2006 -- With temperatures reaching the high nineties and high humidity, Mr. Furbay put a call in to the fire department to see if they could help. Luckily, Mr. Josh Limbacher is an alumnus of the Marching Quakers and a member of the Stonecreek Volunteer Fire Department (as-well-as the spouse of assistant marching band director Mrs. Mindy Limbacher). Mr. Limbacher arrived at 2pm on August 1st to help Mr. Furbay hose down any band member who wished to get a quick cool-down.
